My son and I were visiting relatives in CR and we craved Mexican food. We're from Los Angeles, so we were really hesitant about getting Mexican food in the land of bland food. Our instincts were right and we should have passed. My son ordered enchiladas with mole sauce and it was pretty good. I got the seafood enchiladas. They tasted really fishy and I asked the waitress if they were made with imitation crab. She didn't know, but told me how much she liked them. I asked her to check with the kitchen. She came back to take my son's dessert order and said that it was imitation crab, yet again she said how much she liked them even though she'd never had real crab. I told her that they were NOT good and she didn't say anything and quickly went away. When she came back to bring the check, I asked her to talk to her manager about adjusting the bill, given that the menu didn't say anything about the fake crab and I barely touched them. She did get the manager to remove the charge, but I felt like she should have offered me something else or taken care of the charge without me having to ask. As we walked to the door, the waitress passed right by us and didn't say a word, such as, "thank you" or "come back again", etc.

Love the margs, love the staff, and the food is pretty good. One of my fav Mexican restaurants in town, especially when the waiter is quick to top off my marg with un poco mas tequila. ;)

Located in an old Godfather's but they've adapted it well; it has both a nice family seating area and a bar. Well located to the main Cedar Rapids hotel cluster. Went there twice on a recent business trip and was blown away. It would be the best Mexican place in Omaha, that's for sure! Had Ceviche the first night, the waiter was visibly surprised I ordered it. I think he was thinking "What is a Gringo in CR doing ordering Ceviche??" I told him I eat Ceviche all over the country, first thing I look for on menus. It was outstanding, full meal sized for $12. Went back with 2 friends two nights later and had the mixed fajitas (beef, chicken, shrimp and chorizo, chorizo a Great addition!). Everyone's stuff was top notch. BIG glasses of beer, nice service, owner was very active wandering around. For the salsa people, it is made in house, lots of chunky tomatoes and just enough kick. Well priced. Couldn't recommend it any more. Will be my Go To place in CR.

Quite possibly the best Mexican restaurant in the area. We have been there several times and the service, drinks and food are superb. From the chips, salsa and guacamole (made fresh at your table) to the numerous entrees, you can't go wrong. And the drink offerings will keep you coming back.

Me and my family have been there twice and each time it was excellent . Starting with the service everyone is very friendly an our waiter gave us free ice cream even though he didn't mess up our order. Then they have this guy who rolls around with his cart and makes free fresh guac. The food is fantastic I have gotten the steak casadilla and each time it's great . The atmosphere is very Mexican and authentic I highly recommend the restraint

I have to admit I cringed when my midwest based family suggested a Mexican food restaurant for dinner when I was visiting over the holidays. I truly believe that good Mexican food cannot be found outside of Mexico, AZ & CA, but Los Compadres was legit for Iowa. As we walked into the restaurant I could see it was packed. That was a good sign. I saw my cousin's husband's plate- it was Chili Verde and it looked like the food from home- another good sign. The margarita (Raspberry) was smooth and packed a punch- great sign! I couldn't decipher where the owners were from, but clearly they knew their Mexican food. My server, not so much. He didn't understand any of the Spanish I spoke, and when I asked for carne asada he asked "beef or chicken?" I also asked him for water 3 times without ever receiving any. The food was good, but clearly toned down for midwest tastes. Needs more spices and heat to the salsa to be good. Trick of Mexican restaurants-- they always have a hotter, secret salsa available in kitchen if you ask for it. Compadres hot salsa came out fresh and hot-- you could taste the Habanero. If you like Mexican food and are in Iowa, this is the closest you can get to it without leaving the state and heading to the SW. I definitely recommend it.

The wait staff was really great. Very friendly, and helpful. I ordered 2 burritos (1 beef, 1 chicken), they were both pretty good. The refried beans were flavorful and hot, the rice was tasty. My wife got steak tacos, and they were not the best. They tasted very bland and boring. The atmosphere is a bit dark for our tastes, I wish it was better lit. It was priced very well, though. I think they were just really off their game with the taco beef tips on the day we went. I'll be back and am looking to upgrade my rating.

I disagree with the previous reviewer; though I have only eaten here once, both my dining companion and I really enjoyed our meals. Of course, neither of us thought it would be a good idea to order seafood in Iowa, so... I had some vegetarian cheese enchiladas with a tomatillo salsa that were really tasty. Fresh from the kitchen I found them to be too cheesy, but when I reheated the leftovers the next day, they were absolutely excellent. My friend ordered their special, which was some kind of chicken dish, which she absolutely, positively loved. I don't eat chicken, so I will just have to take her word for it that it rocked. Their chips and salsa are fantastic, too. The salsa is really fresh tasty, not too salty or painfully spicy. The chips are good, too. I could make a meal out of the chips and salsa, but I don't need to since their actual meals are pretty tasty.

Not a huge Mexican food fan but Los Compadres is fantastic. My husband and I crave the fresh, made at your table guacamole. We have gone multiple times and are satisfied every time. Clean and rather quick.

I would have given this place FIVE stars had it not been for ONE THING: the service. The staff weren't very attentive. Maybe they were having an off night or maybe it's because we were sitting in the loft section. But we had to flag down our server just to get him to bring our check over. And then the food. Well. It was excellent. However, the carnitas that I ordered had quite a bit of fat, so wasn't too happy about that. But it was still delicious. Place was clean. Although the lighting was a LITTLE ON THE DIM SIDE for my tastes. Hence. The four star rating.

Walked into a 15 minute wait, was seated within 5 mins after having very good margaritas made from the bar! It was Saturday night and they didn't make them weak! The tableside guac was fresh and amazing! The queso was just as good! I split the chicken, steak and shrimp fajitas and it was more then enough! While we waited for our food, the bartender walked around the restaurant and add shots of tequila to everyone's drinks - that will get me back! Great service, friendly people! Can't say enough of this place, well worth it!

Great service. BeIn sports network on TV. Decent food. Highlight was watching soccer and then motorcycle racing. Chimichanga tasted good, but the salad was served on top of it, not on the side.

Fajitas with pineapple were really good and so were the prices! Their margaritas are massive and our server was awesome. She even came to the table with a bottle of tequila and topped of my margarita. Twice. This has never happened to me anywhere before and probably never will again. If I am ever back in the area I will definitely come back.

Not a lot to look at from the outside but don't judge this book by its cover Or you will miss out on a treat. Los Compadres Mexican restaurant delivers on taste, atmosphere and service. From the rate the margaritas were flying off bar I would say they have to be top notch and out of this world. The place was packed and everyone was enjoying their time and food together. I took a seat at the bar and was promptly invited to a cold Negra Modello on tap. At the same time that my cold beer appeared so did a bowl of fresh chips and salsa always with smiles making me feel very welcome. The menu is very extensive and it was difficult to decide but I decided on the Mole de Polo and guacamole made table side fresh. The mole sauce was amazing and the chicken was tender and flavorful. I ordered the small bowl of guacamole but had more than enough to take some home with me at the end of my meal. I will definitely return to Los Compadres.

The competition in CR among Mex restaurants is getting hotter than a tamale. Btw, I never have like tamales. Probably only because haven't had a good one yet. Los Compadres has raised the ante with fresh cooking and some good ol' friendly service. We shared a platter of Fajitas Vallarta on a Lenten Friday night. It had a nice seafood combo of shrimp, crab, scallops, topped with a tilapia fillet. The veggies were fresh and nicely seasoned. Even the beans and rice were freshly prepared and wonderful. Our server Claudia was cheerful and very efficient checking in with us often even though she was quite busy. I think we found a new Mex favorite!

Food was decent. Nothing spectacular. The jumbo margarita was the size of my head and not weak, so bonus points for that.

We've eaten here four or five times in the last couple of months. It's easily the best Mexican food in town for our tastes. So far I've enjoyed the fajitas compadres, the carne azada tacos, and... some kind of pork enchilada dish; can't remember the name of that one. She likes the fajitas and quesedillas. The salsa is very fresh tasting and our favorite of the ones in the city. If you ask for it, they can also provide you with a bowl of the fresh hot sauce they make in-house. Very good. One warning I would give is that the mole quesedilla is filled with mole sauce in and out. Our first time there my girlfriend ordered it and found the sauce too strong, making the whole dish inedible for her. But the server was very nice about it and gave her a replacement normal quesadilla for free. I can't say we've ordered any of the seafood dishes, but we tend to avoid seafood dishes in general for our Mexican cuisine. The service has always been excellent. The wait staff and managers are very friendly and accomodating. The food is priced competitively with the other restaraunts in the area. We will definately keep going back as long as it stays this good.

Los Compadres in Cedar Rapids is the best Mexican restaurant in town! I have had many of their dishes and all are superb. Their lunchtime buffet is great and perfect for a short lunch break. I love how the owners come around and check in on everyone. Friendly service and top notch food. I will be a customer for years to come!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
